Professor Birch-

Professor Birch is the professor of this series. He gives you your starter pokemon. He is the father of your rival, encouraging you and checking your pokédex. He loves to study in nature, instead of indoors.

If you chose to be a girl when playing Pokémon Ruby Sapphire, then this is who you play as. If you chose to be a boy, May Birch is your rival, choosing the starter pokémon that's super-effective to your type. She gives you the item-finder, and the go-goggles. A helpful girl. Friendliest of all the rivals.

The first gym leader you'll encounter. As the leader of Rustboro gym, she uses rock pokémon and is the commander of a geodude and a nosepass. The TM 39 (Rock Tomb) and the Stone Badge is your award for defeating her in battle.

Brawly leads the Dewford Gym, the second gym you'll challenge. As his name suggests, he commands fighting pokémon. You'll have to beat a Machop and a Makuhita to earn the Knuckle Badge and TM 08 (Bulk Up).

The Mauville City Gym is Wattson's property, user of Electric pokémon. By beating his Magnemite, Voltorb and Magneton, you'll earn TM 34 (Shock Wave) and the Dynamo badge.

Flannery, the leader of the Lavaridge Gym, has fire pokémon at her command. The Heat Badge and TM 50 (Overheat) is yours if you can defeat her.

Meet your father. An excellent pokémon trainer, he decided to move to Hoenn and become the leader of the Petalburg gym, taking you along with him. Eventually you will have to fight him, two slakings and a vigoroth if you want the Balance Badge and TM 42 (Facade)

Winona is the leader of the Fortree City Gym, fighting with flying pokémon. Her love of flight makes her a formadible trainer but you'll have to beat her team (Swellow, Pelipper, Skarmory, Altaria) to earn the Feather Badge and TM 40 (Aerial Ace)

Your only dual gym leader challenge is Tate & Liza. As twins, they shared a psychic connections from birth. They use psychic pokemon (Lunatone and Solrock) to try to defeat your dual team. If you manage to defeat them, they'll give up the TM 04 (Calm Mind) and the Mind Badge.

The final gym leader you'll have the defeat is Wallace. He owns the Sootopolis City Gym, which specializes in water pokémon. Defeat him and the Rain Badge is yours along with TM 03 (Water Pulse)

The first member of the Elite 4 and commander of dark-type pokémon. To get past him, you'll have to defeat his Mightyena, Shiftry, Cacturne, Sharpedo and Absol.

Phoebe comes after Sidney in the Elite 4. She uses the bond she created with ghost-type pokémon to try to defeat you. 2 Dusclop's, 2 Banette's and a Sableye are at her command.

Glacia is the 3rd member of the Elite 4. Her ice pokémon will try to freeze you into defeat. A Walrein, 2 Sealeo's and 2 Glalie's stand in your way.

Drake will do everything in his power to stop you from making progress. You're going to have to faint his dragon pokémon if you want to continue. A Shelgon, Altaria, 2 Flygon's, and a Salamence later, you'll be fighting the champion.

Steven Stone uses the ultimate steel pokémon. He's the champion of the game and helps you with your adventures, giving you the Devon Scope and other useful things. Your dream to become the pokémon champion shall not be realized until you defeat his powerful pokémon. Only 6 pokémon away (Skarmory, Claydol, Aggron, Cradily, Armaldo, Metagross) to becoming champion of Hoenn.

Archie is the leader of Team Aqua, a team devoted to the ocean and sea. His dream is to, along with the help of his executives and grunts, increase the world's water mass and create more habitats for water pokemon to live. If you play Ruby, you'll side with him in his quest to stop Maxie from awakening Groudon and causing a drought to the entire planet.

The leader of Team Magma is Maxie. His dream is to increase the landmass to create more room for pokemon and people alike. His other goal is to stop Archie from doing the complete opposite. He'll side with you if you play Sapphire, or he will be your opposing leader if you play Ruby.
