Berries have advanced from the G/S/C days. Back then, you picked a berry, used it and waited for it to grow again. Those berries could be used for healing and making pokeballs only. They had very unoriginal names too: berry, psncureberry, bitter berry.
The R/S berries have much more "unique" names, playing on names of acual fruits and vegetables: rawst (straw), nomel (lemon) and watmel (watermelon) etc.. These berries can be used for much more than just healing, although they cannot be made into pokéballs. Berries can be used for making pokéblocks for pokémon contests, they can increase stats of pokémon when their HP is low and they can still heal. Unfortunately, some berries cannot be gotten without a GameShark or Pro Action Replay and some berries are impossibly hard to find (liechi).
Another good thing about berries in R/S is the ability to grow them. The one-of a kind berries (pamtre, spelon, belue, watmel, durin) can be planted and watered to produce more. These special berries must be watered many times to produce more than 1. A girl in the Pretty Flower Shop in near Rustboro will give you the Wailmer Pail which is used to water berries.
Pokéblocks are also a new thing in R/S. They come with the contests and raise the condition of your pokémon. Different colours have different tastes and raise different stats. Refer to the table below for details. Pokéblocks are actually candies for pokémon.
Taste | Colour | Raised Stat |
Spicy | Red | Cool |
Sweet | Pink | Cute |
Sour | Yellow | Tough |
Bitter | Green | Smart |
Dry | Blue | Beauty |
| | Berries in R/S have different tastes. They can be spicy, sweet, sour, bitter or dry. Keep this chart in mind when you're blending berries. Certain natures of pokémon like and dislike certain tastes. If you give dry berries to a pokémon with a nature that hates dry blocks, it will say "xxxxxx disdainfully ate the pokéblock". If it likes dry pokéblocks it will say "xxxxxx happily ate the pokéblock". "xxxxxx ate the pokéblock" will be displayed if it has a nature that is neutral to dry pokéblocks. If it doesn't like the pokéblock, then it's gonna take some really high quality pokéblocks or many low quality pokéblocks to max out beauty (feebas). Spicy blocks (cool) will give your pokémon more in the preliminary judging if it's in a cool contest. There are colours besides these 5. See below.

These are other colours of other berries that are achieved by mixing different berries (e.g.- Cheri & Aspear). As you can see, some of them raise quite a few attributes. Gold is only achieved by mixing a Leichi berry with others. The latter are very high level blocks and their berries are either very difficult or even impossible to get so do not expect them anytime soon.
